Our Story
Marcela's grandmother started working many, many years ago in her bakery Casto's in Cochabamba, Bolivia.
With time she sold that bakery and transition to Alexandria,VA to open her bakery where she started selling her now famous bread, saltenas, and El Pique.
Later she was influenced by the Central American Culture and adventured to cook Salvadorean, Honduran and Guatemalas dishes and continued her baking career introducing cakes. Marcela's very strong female oriented family keeps the business and the innovation going. Becoming on of the most well know Latin Cuisine restaurants and bakery in Alexandria, VA.
Central American Dishes
Marcela's restaurant , is a Alexandria's latin local favorite place to go, where each bite is prepared to thrill the senses by pushing the flavors of what we have come to expect from our latin recipes - and what is possible - from Central American cuisine. The creations combine traditional recipes and new creations, as well as flavors and techniques, to deliver an imaginative and progressive tasting menu, offered at a family friendly restaurant setting.
What We Offer
Empanadas
Typically empanadas (salteñas) can be found in any town or city throughout the country of Bolivia, but each area has its variations; Cochabamba and Sucre
claim to have the best version of this snack, and many will go out of their way to try the variation from Potosí.
In La Paz, it is a tradition to enjoy empanadas (salteñas) as a mid-morning snack, although vendors often start selling salteñas very early in the morning. The pastries are sold anywhere from 7am to noon; most vendors sell out by mid-morning. Thankfully Marcela's Bakery continues with it's Potosi's original recipe that can be tasted all year long at any time of the day. Come try it!
